Step Into Singapore’s Rich Botanical Heritage With Your Family This Chinese New Year
Singapore’s vibrant landscape is home to an incredible diversity of 1,689 tree species, from 109 tree families. Beyond their beauty and the shade they provide, these trees play a crucial role in cooling our urban environment and supporting diverse wildlife, contributing to our nation’s vision as a City in Nature.
In line with this vision, the National Parks Board (NParks) launched the OneMillionTrees movement, with the goal of planting one million trees by 2030, creating accessible spaces that contribute to both environmental sustainability and our collective well-being.
Just as trees grow stronger when rooted together, so do families. By learning about their significance and participating in conservation efforts as a family, we can celebrate those who matter most, while making a meaningful impact on the world around us.
In this month’s blog, join us as we explore family-friendly activities that offer opportunities to connect with nature, nurture bonds, and play a part in conserving our environment for generations to come.
1. Discover Singapore’s Green Heritage with DIY Tree Trails
Our City in Nature offers a variety of DIY Tree Trails, perfect for families looking to explore the city’s green spaces at their own pace. These trails highlight the diversity of local trees while sharing a glimpse into the area’s history. Here are some trails to check out:
The Civic District Tree Trail is a 3-kilometer journey through Singapore’s historic heart. Starting under the grand canopies of Rain Trees near the Istana, the trail winds past a variety of trees including the Angsana, Bodhi and the Indian Rubber Tree with its striking aerial roots outside the National Museum. It concludes at Raffles Landing Site, where Singapore White Frangipanis bloom amid the whispers of history.
For a peaceful, nature-filled walk, you and your little ones can also consider the Heritage Trees at the Changi Walking Trail. This trail features 7 trees, each celebrated for its age, size, or rarity under Singapore’s Heritage Tree Scheme. Notable trees include the rare Damar Hitam Gajah, the towering Sepetir, and the uniquely twisted Kelat Hitam. End your walk with a family picnic at Turnhouse Park or a stroll along the Changi Park connector.
Another notable spot to explore is the Trees of the Fort Trail at Fort Canning Park, where natural beauty meets historical significance. This trail features 25 remarkable trees, including ancient Kapok Trees, the grand Malayan Banyan, and the unique “upside-down” Baobab Tree. Set against lush greenery, the trail offers a glimpse into Fort Canning Hill’s rich history—once home to the 14th-century Malay Kingdom and later transformed into a fort in the 1860s.
Exploring these nature trails is a perfect way for families to immerse in the beauty of the outdoors and create cherished memories together. Along the way, the little ones can uncover Singapore’s diverse trees and rich history, sparking a deeper love for the environment and its significance in our lives.

This one-of-a-kind exhibition in Singapore brings beloved Disney and Pixar characters like Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, and Buzz Lightyear to life as breathtaking horticultural sculptures.
Created from hydrangeas, moss, and baby’s breath, these larger-than-life creations seamlessly blend nature with art, showcasing the creativity and beauty that can emerge when we celebrate our botanical heritage. Open daily from 10:00am to 9:00pm, this mesmerising display will be available till 31 March 2025.

3. Learn more about Nature’s Resilience at the Albizia Exhibition
The Albizia tree (Albizia moluccana) might not be the first tree that comes to mind, but its resilience and ability to thrive in challenging environments makes it truly remarkable. Native to the Maluku Islands, this tree has gradually spread across Singapore, thriving in disturbed soils and transforming barren landscapes into green spaces.
Visit the Albizia Exhibition at the Punggol Regional Library from now till 2 February 2025, to discover more about these unique trees found in both Singapore and the Maluku Islands. Through interactive displays, you and your loved ones can explore the ecological significance of these trees and their role in rewilding urban spaces. The exhibition will also be available at other libraries, such as Woodlands Regional Library (5 February – 23 March), Jurong Regional Library (26 March – 11 May), and Tampines Regional Library (14 May – 29 June).
This exhibition provides a great opportunity for families to understand the Albizia tree’s contribution to urban sustainability, all while fostering a collective sense of environmental responsibility.

4. Support Forest Conservation with #ForestOfProsperity
This Chinese New Year, in collaboration with Families for Life and registered charity and IPC, NParks’ Garden City Fund, we are spotlighting the greatest prosperity – Family – through our #ForestOfProsperity initiative that celebrates the deep-rooted connections of family while raising awareness of Singapore’s rich botanical heritage.
Join us at our #ForestOfProsperity pop-up event at Bugis Junction, Level 1 Atrium (outside The Body Shop) from now till 19 January, and join our nationwide pledge movement to conserve a greener home for future generations.
With your support, we will be donating $15,000 to NParks’ registered charity and IPC, Garden City Fund, contributing to the #OneMillionTrees movement.
While exploring our #ForestOfProsperity pop-up event, take a moment to pen down well-wishes for your family and hang them on our Prosperity Wishing Tree, and you will have the chance to take home a limited-edition DIY Families for Life Craft Kit. We would also like to invite you to celebrate the birth of your child with the #ForestOfProsperity Tree Planting Event, and inspire the next generation to sow the seeds of a sustainable future.
In collaboration with NParks’ Garden City Fund, we are also spotlighting the lushness of our green canopies, which serve as a pivotal foundation for thriving ecosystems, on our Geneco Red Packets. Inspired by the tradition of Reunion or 团圆—an integral part of Chinese New Year that brings families together as one—our design concept symbolises flourishing trees across the nation, upholding the spirit of togetherness and growth.
Additionally, within each red packet, which is printed on 100% recycled paper, you will find lesser-known facts about our towering evergreens, spotlighting their ecological significance amidst our City in Nature.
For a chance to be 1 of 50 winners to receive a set of these limited edition Geneco Red Packets and $28 eCapitaVoucher, you can also take part in our Facebook and Instagram giveaway contests by simply answering “True” or “False” to the statement: “You can find over 250 Heritage Trees in Singapore.“
Through these activities, we hope to inspire families to deepen their connection to nature and take part in the collective effort to safeguard Singapore’s green spaces for future generations.
Together, let’s #PowerTheChange and foster a lush canopy of forests that is home for generations to come.
