Take Your Little Explorer on an Exciting Journey Through Nature This March Holidays

With forests covering 31% of the Earth’s land surface, their role in supporting life is incredibly significant. They are home to over 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity, hosting a vast array of plants, animals, and insects that are vital for the health of our ecosystems.
In addition to being biodiversity hotspots, forests play a vital role in purifying the air, providing essential resources like food and medicine, and acting as a natural buffer against climate change.
With the International Day of Forests approaching on 21 March 2025, it is a timely reminder to appreciate how forests contribute to our world. Since its inception by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012, this global observance has helped raise awareness and foster collective action to protect these invaluable ecosystems.
This year’s theme, “Forests and Foods,” highlights how deeply forests are intertwined with our food systems—providing edible nuts, mushrooms, fruits, and wild meat—while also supporting biodiversity, including pollinators crucial for agriculture.
To commemorate this occasion, we have curated a collection of engaging nature-based activities designed to spark curiosity and inspire your children to connect with nature, all while learning about how forests support life during the March school holidays.
1. Get Up Close with Nature’s Most Thrilling Plants at Savage Garden

(Source: Science Centre Singapore)
Nature is full of surprises, and carnivorous plants are among its most intriguing wonders. If you have ever wondered what it is like to be caught inside a Venus Flytrap or how a Pitcher Plant lures its prey, Savage Garden at Science Centre Singapore is the perfect place to find out.
Located just past Professor Crackitt’s Light Fantastic Mirror Maze in Hall A, this immersive exhibit brings these extraordinary plants to life through animatronic displays, larger-than-life models, and hands-on activities designed to spark curiosity in visitors of all ages.
Your journey begins with a mesmerising welcome from a group of animatronic carnivorous plants, introducing your children to their incredible survival strategies. Engage with interactive models showcasing the mechanics of the Venus Flytrap and Pitcher Plant, and explore a microscope station that provides a close-up view of the bladderwort plant—an aquatic carnivore with thousands of tiny traps designed to capture unsuspecting prey.
For an experience like no other, your kids can climb up and slide down the Pitcher Plant Slide, dodging playful digital surprises along the way. Then, step inside the giant Venus Flytrap exhibit, where its jaws will slowly close around you—giving you a fun, photo-worthy moment to imagine life as an insect. Before you leave, walk through the Corkscrew Plant tunnel, a twisting pathway of white “roots” that mimics the plant’s unique digestive system.
Whether you are a budding botanist or simply seeking an unforgettable adventure with your little ones, Savage Garden offers an exhilarating way to discover nature’s strangest and most captivating plants.

Thoughtfully designed for all ages, it features accessible walkways, scenic trails, and immersive habitats, providing a unique opportunity to experience the richness of Southeast Asia’s rainforests up close.
As you and your young explorers wander through raised paths, cross gentle streams, and take in the vibrant surroundings, you may spot a majestic Malayan tiger cooling off in a stream or lounging in the shade. Watch as red dholes, babirusas, and other unique wildlife roam freely in dynamic environments that mimic their natural habitats, offering an up-close and memorable experience.
For thrill-seekers, experience a breathtaking 20-meter freefall with the Canopy Jump, or go on a guided harnessed rock traverse and caving adventure which offer adrenaline-pumping challenges amid nature. The Karsts’ jagged limestone formations provide a striking backdrop for swinging primates, while The Cavern, inspired by Malaysia’s Mulu Caves, features intricate rock formations and paths leading to hidden cave dwellers like racer snakes and giant black scorpions.
With more than 7,000 newly planted trees and shrubs, Rainforest Wild Asia is a testament to Singapore’s commitment to conservation. Step Into Singapore’s Rich Botanical Heritage With Your Family This Chinese New Year

Singapore’s vibrant landscape is home to an incredible diversity of 1,689 tree species, from 109 tree families. Beyond their beauty and the shade they provide, these trees play a crucial role in cooling our urban environment and supporting diverse wildlife, contributing to our nation’s vision as a City in Nature.
In line with this vision, the National Parks Board (NParks) launched the OneMillionTrees movement, with the goal of planting one million trees by 2030, creating accessible spaces that contribute to both environmental sustainability and our collective well-being.
Just as trees grow stronger when rooted together, so do families. By learning about their significance and participating in conservation efforts as a family, we can celebrate those who matter most, while making a meaningful impact on the world around us.
In this month’s blog, join us as we explore family-friendly activities that offer opportunities to connect with nature, nurture bonds, and play a part in conserving our environment for generations to come.

Our City in Nature offers a variety of DIY Tree Trails, perfect for families looking to explore the city’s green spaces at their own pace. These trails highlight the diversity of local trees while sharing a glimpse into the area’s history. Here are some trails to check out:
The Civic District Tree Trail is a 3-kilometer journey through Singapore’s historic heart. Starting under the grand canopies of Rain Trees near the Istana, the trail winds past a variety of trees including the Angsana, Bodhi and the Indian Rubber Tree with its striking aerial roots outside the National Museum. It concludes at Raffles Landing Site, where Singapore White Frangipanis bloom amid the whispers of history.
For a peaceful, nature-filled walk, you and your little ones can also consider the Heritage Trees at the Changi Walking Trail. This trail features 7 trees, each celebrated for its age, size, or rarity under Singapore’s Heritage Tree Scheme. Notable trees include the rare Damar Hitam Gajah, the towering Sepetir, and the uniquely twisted Kelat Hitam. End your walk with a family picnic at Turnhouse Park or a stroll along the Changi Park connector.
Another notable spot to explore is the Trees of the Fort Trail at Fort Canning Park, where natural beauty meets historical significance. This trail features 25 remarkable trees, including ancient Kapok Trees, the grand Malayan Banyan, and the unique “upside-down” Baobab Tree. Set against lush greenery, the trail offers a glimpse into Fort Canning Hill’s rich history—once home to the 14th-century Malay Kingdom and later transformed into a fort in the 1860s.
Exploring these nature trails is a perfect way for families to immerse in the beauty of the outdoors and create cherished memories together. Along the way, the little ones can uncover Singapore’s diverse trees and rich history, sparking a deeper love for the environment and its significance in our lives.
